August News for A Cozy Death Book Club

Hi All,

I hope that each of you is having a marvelous August. Last month's meeting was awesome. We had Sue Jaffarian, the author of several mystery series and travelogs, speak to the group. It was well-attended (although there were some sign ups who didn't make it to the meeting). Sue is a wonderful speaker, had some funny as well as impressive adventures to talk about as she traveled the United States in her RV. She told us about outfitting the RV, writing each day, and stopping at some small towns. She said that most of the people that she encountered were friendly and helpful. She also talked about some of the out of the way museums and sights that she's seen. Many of us had read her latest publication called I Sleep Around a tongue in cheek reference to all of her travels which we discussed as well. Her book reminded me of another travelog called The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal. It's by Jonathan Mooney. That book also speaks to the wonderful and sometimes peculiar sites that are to be visited off the beaten road. You might want to pick it up in addition to Sue's book. It ends up being quite a life-affirming book. All and all, having Sue at our meeting made it one of our really fun meetings, and I hope that we can make Sue's visit to the club an annual delight.

This next month our meeting is on August 25th at 2:00 pm Pacific on Zoom. Those of you who RSVP will be able to see the hyperlink to the Zoom meeting on the Meetup website for A Cozy Death Book Club. It also will go out on a reminder note to RSVP'ers the Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday morning before the meeting. There are still a few places left for attendees. We're reading and discussing Margery Allingham's The Crime at Black Dudley published in 1929. It's one of the cozy mysteries written during the golden age of mystery writing. She along with Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, and a few others, wrote the mystery books that we measure the more modern mysteries against. You'll enjoy the novel.

Folks, if you do RSVP that you're attending, please remember that we make provision for that approximate number. As a courtesy, please change your RSVP to reflect your change in plans. We do understand that life happens and other people or events cause us to change our personal intent, but the organizers need to know. I and the other organizers are looking forward to seeing you at the meeting on August 25.

We are beginning to get lists of cozies for next year's great reads. If you have any suggestions please pass them along. Also, do join up and read the blog for August and the previous months on acozydeath.com We'll be posting book reviews on the 20th. You're invited to send in a review of a cozy that you've read. We'll post it on the 20th of the month.

As always, keep reading and the best regards,

Karin Diskin
