Turning Pages

We took a bit of a vacation in December to revamp our blog site. I hope you like it. It’s more focused on our club on Meetup and the books that we have already read, want to read, and are reading. So — happy New Year to us all. You’ll be able to use the calendar on this web site more efficiently and, if you can’t remember or didn’t write down the name of the book, the calendar will have the information for the month on the correct day. We’ve eliminated the items for sale so that this web site doesn’t mix up our focus. As we become more familiar with the web site’s tools we’ll be able to add the game items that we use for the month (i.e. Bingo cards or playing cards and so on). This month, on the 28th, we have Sue Ann Jaffarian speaking to us about her writing experience, her cozy mystery series with Odelia Grey, and her travels around the country. Every time I look at her photo in front of her RV I think “why didn’t I do that?’ She has to have encountered some interesting people and situations for her future writing. Please sign up for the meeting and come. We’re bound to have a good time and learn a lot.

This reminds me. We now have over 400 members. Not all of you come to our meetings and we’d like to meet you. You signed up for a reason and if we’re not providing the kind of meeting or information that you’d like, please let us know so that we can make the club meet your interests and needs. With that said, we have a new member this month. Tahlia’s little one was born a bit early and chose Capricorn instead of Aquarius for his astrological sign. He’s a bundle of cuteness! Many congratulations!

Since this is a month of new beginnings, I decided to put wallpaper up in my bedroom. I bought the peel and stick variety because I know me — I change my mind often. This way if I decide on a new color scheme in a couple of years, I’ll be able to peel the paper off, easy peasy. Well, I’ve got one strip up along with a piece that was a trial run piece and I have been staring at it for more than a week. I completely forgot that I have my television hanging from one of those television thingees that can move around so you can view it from different parts of the room. I absolutely am afraid to unroll the next roll of wallpaper and cut incorrectly. The squares and rectangles with the television fasteners are defeating me. I’m thinking of calling one of those places where they provide experts to come in for a few hours and do the job that is described as ‘do it yourself.’ I guess I’ll stare at the strip a couple more days before I admit defeat.

On the other hand, I finished with my last tutoring student. I tutored RJ since second grade and now he’s graduated from college. I have partner studied with him the last four years while he majored in history. We’ve taken some interesting classes, including ancient middle eastern mariners, art of the Sumerians, and a lot of Russian history. I feel as if I earned another BA, but it was his accomplishment. Now, I have to get used to not having any more students. I thought that I’d revel in my new found time, but it’s still new and I find that I miss the studying of new materials and ideas. I spoke with a friend about this and we’ve decided to take classes through Santa Monica Community College. My daughter and I signed up for a foreign language course through an NYC school. The language course meets every Sunday at 8 in the morning. I’ll have no excuse to stay in bed on Sundays. Strange and exciting endings and beginnings are in the offing.

Let us know if you have had a fun new experience. It makes cold January a bit warmer!
