March Blog

This is my birthday month. It’s my daughter’s, Tahlia’s, Osra’s, and Maureen’s as well. It might even be yours. Welcome to March Pisces people. We’re supposed to be spiritual and intuitive. It doesn’t always work that way. Still, I read my horoscope from the Astro Twins pretty faithfully. They work so hard at making my life sound magical and agreeable.

Keeping Secrets

We’re supposed to keep secrets as well as being intuitive. I find this characteristic almost unbearable. I bought Diana a piece of jewelry for her birthday. I think it’s beautiful. I have kept it a secret for almost a month now. I’m sure it’s going to burble out of my mouth at any second. I am not good at keeping a secret – don’t tell me anything that has to stay that way for long. It’s always on the tip of my tongue and I have to physically say to myself “don’t say it. Remember you’re keeping it a secret!” The sheer effort is exhausting. I don’t know how you all are, but I have to practically stuff my mouth with something so that your secret doesn’t pop out of my mouth. And I mean well. I really do. It’s just so, so hard. (“Diana, should I give you your present early? Do you want to know where I hid it? I told the dog, Barnaby, so I’d have someone to tell, but he’s already forgotten. I can tell just by looking at him.”)

Days to Recognize

March, this year, is full of holidays. There’s the start of Ramadan on the 10th, then the Ides of March on the 15th, followed by St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th, Spring on the 20th or, if you’re very into the movement of the planets, the Vernal Equinox, followed by Palm Sunday on the 24th and Purim on the 24th, Holi on the 25th, and finally Easter on the 31st. The month fairly bursts with opportunities to see friends and family and eat special foods – except for the Ides of March. Oh dear. Poor Caesar and, of course, Brutus. Was Brutus always going to stab Caesar or did he get bullied into it? One way or the other, he didn’t think things through and now he’s mostly known for creating a holiday that only a Shakespearean would enjoy. I have to read The Tragedy of Julius Caesar again. It’s a great play and is where we get the phrase “beware the Ides of March.”

The one day I didn’t list is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time. Clocks move ahead and we all get an excuse to say that’s why we’re extra tired. I know that I’m complaining, but it’s simply not my favorite weekend activity. Oh well, we get used to the time change fairly quickly!

Whatever holidays you celebrate this month, enjoy!  We are so lucky to have these moments.

Fondly,

Karin
